2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Blue Beret
When Miljenko “Mike” Grgich was studying viticulture and enology in the 1950s at the University of Zagreb in Croatia, he didn’t have much money. When he accidentally left his umbrella on a streetcar, Mike couldn’t afford a new one. But, a French beret caught his eye. It would protect his head from the rain, and it could fold up into a pocket so he wouldn’t lose it.

The Wine
Aromas of sweet raspberry and blackberry, with pine tips, peat, moss and undertones of rose blossom tantalize your senses and whet your appetite for more to come. On the palate, delightful, rich dark fruit flavors immerge, supported by orange, blood orange, and undertones of spice. Fresh tannins provide mid-palate density, transitioning into a long savory finish. Enjoy this wine with braised lamb shanks, steak au poivre, short ribs, roasted duck, beef bourguignon, and a good story about a blue beret!
Vintage
We had high rain fall at the beginning of the season, a mild winter, and then we finally transitioned into a beautiful spring. There was an early bud break and flowering, followed by sunny days and high temperatures through June and August.
Vineyard
Blue Beret Cabernet Sauvignon comes from grapes grown in our Yountville vineyard, with Rutherford grapes rounding out the blend. On 63 acres, located on the valley floor, our Yountville vineyard cultivates classic Bordeaux varieties and is home to a 25-acre plot (planted in 1959) with the second oldest Cabernet vines in the Napa Valley. In 2000, in the land surrounding our Rutherford winery, we planted 17.3 acres of Cabernet along with an additional acre of Petit Verdot to blend with Cabernet Sauvignon. We farm our vineyards naturally, using the principles of regenerative agriculture, and they are certified organic.
